Of Cha Siu Ramen

The family was craving for ramen today and we decided to make the extra effort to travel further away to get our noodle fix.

Rather then the usual neighborhood Japanese joint (Ichiban) which we were kinda tired of
the Dad drove to Central at Clarke Quay so that we could really get the good stuff at Marutama.

Marutama's a ramen joint from Japan which set up a branch in Singapore not too long ago. Central was pretty much the obvious choice given the new "japanapore" concept of the whole place (btw what little architecture that monster of a building has there is crap). Of course the ramen here had to live up to certain standards being in close proximity to Miharu at Gallery Hotel , Tanpopo at Liang court and Santouka Ramen one floor below it. And boy does this joing put up a good fight.

Marutama is small-ish ramen place which is how i always imagined a ramen joint to be with the dark interiors and bar stool seats. A long queue at the entrance is always a sign of good ramen joint and the food comes fast and you probably feel the slight pressure to finish your food faster than usual. (which is a good thing because eating ramen at a relaxed place just doesn;t do it for me...think hong kong cha chan ting kinda rush) The menu is simple with ramen served in the original chicken stock and a spicy version. Additional toppings such as eggs and extra char siu come as optional toppings. You do get the seasonal flavors too like the 7 nut mix my brother had. For first timers i recommend the non spicy version which is the best seller because of its rich flavorful soup. I ordered mine with an extra topping of Char Siu. What arrived 10 minutes later were 4 glorious pieces of slow cooked pork that melt in your mouth instantly. The cloudy flavorful, unbelievably good chicken based stock was well complimented with a heap of spring onions and seaweed. The soup alone was well worth the $12, it was the best i ever had. seriously my concept of chicken stock totally changed after this bowl of noodles. We didn't come out dry mouthed and thirsty since the broth was had no msg in it and NO MSG =. good shit
The Mum and the Brudder
Cha Siu Ramen, originally uploaded by jonolist.

Good news for Big eaters like me and the brudder because we loved it so much we asked for a top up of ramen (which came up to be quite cheap for an extra dollar) The noodles were chewy and despite its thin stringy appearance was very hearty. Way better than the instant variety you get in crapped up food courts, which makes me question how those joints even bothered to start a business.

We left the place slurping the bowls clean and came out happy and satisfied of our ramen cravings. I guess along the way we also promised never to return to crap ramen joints ....ahem *Ajisen* anymore.
